Shared Boys Bedroom Makeover - Colour Block

We started with a mix of beds we built (previously bunk beds) and a cute black iron bed, a ceiling fan necessary for these story and half rooms and a great room shape. But what this room lacked was personality and fun (exactly what you need for a kids room, right?).

Isn’t it just the cutest?! My boys just love it which I consider a victory with 3 boys sharing a room. My goal for any kids room is to create a room that they love and can grow with them.

I wanted to add fun and colour to their room but with the slanted walls, coloured walls would have been too much (and impossible to find a colour they all agreed on)…so I decided an uneven colour block with Iron Ore (Benjamin Moore) on the bottom and White Heron (Benjamin Moore) on the top was the perfect combination. I knew with their colourful wool rug I could add bits of colour throughout their room. Then as luck would have it, I won these cute decals from Kenna Sato Designs last summer and I knew just where they were going to go!

Although they have a fairly large room, when you get 3 boys in there and all their stuff it can feel full rather quickly. So I decided pushing the beds along the wall would give them all their own little ‘nook’ and still give them open floor place to play and move around freely.

I used spice racks from IKEA to create little bookshelves for them and mounted plug in wall sconces beside their beds for reading and to eliminate the need for nightstands.

For their bedding I wanted keep in simple but still cozy and fun! They already had the duvets so I just mix and matched some pillows and made some fun potato stamp pillows out of $3 IKEA rugs. I paired them with some plain white sheets, keeping the colour on their pillows and throws.

The second project I did in their room is create a LEGO closet for all of their treasured creations. I was tired of always stepping on the LEGO or bits of it scattered around their room or shoved underneath their beds (can you relate?). The room has two closets and one wasn’t being used to its’ potential so I took of the door and made a simple floating desk and two shelves out of leftover plywood. Then we got sorting their LEGO and found many fun ways to organize them into colours and left some room on their shelves for their creations once they were built.

As per my eldest sons’ request, I painted the inside of the closet green (Northern Glen @ 50%, Behr) and then we added a pop of colour with a fun yellow pendant light that Simon hardwired in. Lastly, we added a mustard yellow cabinet on rollers that could give them more LEGO storage and move around the room as needed.

The beauty of this closet is that it can grow with them and can easily transform into a desk for them in their teenage years.

Future plans for this room are to convert their other closet into a closet system for all 3 boys (no small task) and then create a desk area with bookshelves in another corner of the room. But as I remind myself daily, a house takes time (wink).
